THE NEW RENAISSANCE FILM FESTIVAL TO SCREEN

100 OUTSTANDING INDEPENDENT SHORTS, FEATURES AND

DOCUMENTARIES AT LAB111, AMSTERDAM (nl),

FROM 3-5 MARCH 2017

Award-winning European drama, LGBTQ films and documentaries

AMSTERDAM, NL – New Renaissance Film Festival (NRFF), “One of the UK’s top film festivals” (London METRO, O1.08.16), is to present 100 films at LAB111 with its two screens. The venue is situated close to the famous Vondelpark.

The programme of international shorts includes a powerful section of European filmmakers and short dramas with strong emotional themes and real depth. Some of these are new releases and premieres, whilst others have already received recognition and won awards.

Themes vary from the challenges of relationships as in Nkosi Coiffureby Frederike Migom (Belgium), to a future world in the ‘The Swelling’ by Tom Bewilogua (Germany). Several stories use European history as the backdrop, such as Yugoslavia in 1990 (‘Eclair by Marko Gjokovik), or Nazi Germany (‘Die Mut Probe by Rena Dumont) and in the 70’s like Andreas Grützner’s documentary ‘Christ/El. Or a more timeless, but remarkable and dreamlike film like Limbofrom the filmmaker Konstantina Kotzamani (Greece).

The festival is open to a diversity of different voices and points of view, and a section is devoted to LGBTQ films. Highlights include the feature arthouse comedy Seat In Shadowby Henry Coombes (UK), which recently premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival and received rave reviews by the film critics. And ‘In The Mirror by Manuel M. Mercier (Canada), a deeply moving drama about a transgender woman and her son. Less serious is the hilarious film “Faux Paws” about a gay werewolf.

Inspiring documentaries include Amor Puro Y Duroby Emmy-nominated filmmaker Catherine Gund, about the legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, with a contribution by Almodovar; and The Lavender Scare’ by US broadcast veteran Josh Howard, based on David K. Johnson’s book about the cold war persecution of gays and lesbians in the US federal government.

In a collaboration with the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (Academy Awards® accredited), a selection of Japanese films are to be screened, alongside some of the winners of the New Renaissance Film Festival, London 2016.

“New Renaissance has spent months seeking out new gems and discovering excellent stories that move you, challenge you and above all inspire you. We know fans of indie film will love this diverse festival.” Director, Jan Hendrik Verstraten
